PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES – In a powerful moment of compassion that has captured hearts online, a Natural Parks employee in the Philippines is being hailed as a hero after a video surfaced of him rescuing a trapped and distressed shark. The incident took place during a routine patrol in the protected waters of a marine sanctuary. The park ranger, identified by colleagues in social media posts as Rodel Alforque, noticed unusual thrashing near a shallow reef. Upon closer inspection, he discovered a thresher shark, a species known for its distinctively long, whip-like tail, hopelessly entangled in a “ghost net”—a discarded fishing net that drifts through the ocean, indiscriminately trapping marine life.
A video, filmed by another ranger, shows Alforque calmly assessing the situation. Without hesitation, he waded into the water, carefully approaching the agitated animal. The shark, clearly exhausted and stressed, was wrapped tightly in the thick ropes of the net, which were cutting into its fins and restricting its movement. With steady hands and a small knife, Alforque meticulously began to cut the ropes, working swiftly to free the creature while respecting its power.
After several tense minutes, the final piece of the net was cut away. The thresher shark, momentarily still, seemed to register its freedom before giving a powerful flick of its tail and disappearing into the deep blue.
