Video Shows Florida Man Rescuing His Puppy From Alligator Attack

Instinct Over Fear: The Incredible Story of the Florida Man Who Wrestled an Alligator to Save His Puppy

The term “Florida Man” often conjures images of bizarre headlines and questionable decisions. But every so often, a story emerges from the Sunshine State that redefines the trope, replacing absurdity with sheer, unadulterated heroism. This is the story of Richard Wilbanks, a man whose split-second decision to fight an alligator with his bare hands turned a terrifying moment into a viral testament to the bond between a man and his dog.

The scene, captured by a wildlife surveillance camera, unfolds in the deceptive tranquility of a backyard in Estero, Florida. Wilbanks, 74, is walking near the edge of a pond with his three-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Gunner. In a flash of prehistoric violence, the water erupts. A juvenile alligator, moving with terrifying speed, snatches the small puppy and drags him under the surface.

What happens next is pure instinct.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Wilbanks, still clutching his cigar, plunges into the murky water. He doesn’t scream or panic. He wades directly toward the thrashing reptile, locates it beneath the surface, and emerges with the gator held firmly in his hands. The battle is far from over. The puppy is still trapped in the alligator’s powerful jaws.

The video shows an intense, primal struggle. Wilbanks wrestles the reptile, trying to get enough leverage to force its mouth open. With incredible strength and determination, he pries the jaws apart. The moment the pressure releases, Gunner, the puppy, yelps and scrambles free, running onto the grass, shaken but alive. Wilbanks, having won the fight, tosses the alligator back into the pond and calmly walks out of the water.

The entire heart-stopping ordeal lasted mere seconds.

The footage itself has a unique backstory. The camera was not a typical security cam but was installed as part of a partnership between the Florida Wildlife Federation and the fSTOP Foundation, designed to capture images of local wildlife to help residents appreciate the ecosystem they share. They ended up capturing a dramatic intersection of that ecosystem with human life.

In the aftermath, Gunner the puppy was taken to a veterinarian and, miraculously, suffered only a single puncture wound. He recovered quickly from the traumatic event. Wilbanks, however, didn’t escape unscathed. “My hands were just chewed up,” he later told news outlets, displaying his bandaged palms. He got a tetanus shot and considered the injuries a small price to pay for saving his beloved pet.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the story is Wilbanks’ perspective on his reptilian adversary. He holds no ill will toward the alligator and advocated for it to be left alone in its habitat.

“They’re part of nature and part of our lives,” Wilbanks said, embodying a philosophy of coexistence that many Floridians learn to adopt. “It was doing what alligators do.”

He views the incident as a powerful lesson—a reminder that when you live on the edge of the wild, you must remain vigilant. For him, the risk is worth the reward of living so close to nature.

The story of Richard Wilbanks and Gunner is more than just a shocking video. It’s a raw display of courage, fueled by the love for a pet that many consider family. It’s a story that proves that when faced with a life-or-death situation, the instinct to protect can overpower the instinct to flee, even when the opponent is a modern-day dinosaur. And for once, it gave the “Florida Man” a new title: hero.
