In a rare and jaw-dropping encounter, ground squirrels and a mongoose joined forces to fend off a venomous Cape cobra, each determined to protect their young. This dramatic wildlife moment unfolded at the Nossob Campsite in the heart of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, providing an unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to witness it.
Lara De Matos, who filmed the encounter, shared her account of the astonishing sight with LatestSightings.com. It began as a seemingly calm afternoon:
“We were having lunch in Nossob campsite after a morning game drive. We hadn’t seen anything thrilling, so my husband and I were feeling a bit let down. But then, near the swimming pool, we noticed a commotion—ground squirrels darting around, and a cape cobra inching closer to the burrows.”
Grabbing their cameras, Lara and her husband moved in closer, capturing every intense moment as the drama unfolded.
A Fierce Defense: Squirrels vs. Cobra
As Lara described, the ground squirrels were relentless in their efforts, taking turns to distract and confront the cobra from different angles. It was a fight for survival, as the squirrels knew the cobra posed a serious threat to their young hidden in burrows below.
“The squirrels took turns constantly attacking the cobra from different angles. And then, as if things couldn’t get more intense, a mongoose appeared on the scene!”
The Mongoose Joins the Battle
With the arrival of the mongoose, the dynamics shifted. The mongoose, known for its agility and resistance to venom, launched itself at the cobra. Observing this, the squirrels stepped back, seemingly taking a break as the mongoose took over the battle.
“The mongoose fought valiantly, darting around the cobra while the squirrels watched from the sidelines. Finally, the cobra made the wise decision to retreat, but the entire group followed, making sure it left for good.”
