Hurricanes are massive storms with powerful winds, heavy rain, and destructive storm surges. They form over warm ocean waters, gaining strength as they draw in heat and moisture. When winds reach 74 mph or more, the storm is officially classified as a hurricane. The strongest ones can have winds over 150 mph, tearing apart buildings and flipping cars. Storm surges—huge walls of water pushed by the hurricane’s winds—cause some of the worst damage. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina’s surge flooded 80% of New Orleans. More recently, Hurricane Ian in 2022 brought over 12 feet of storm surge to parts of Florida, wiping out entire neighborhoods. Hurricanes are ranked from Category 1 to Category 5 based on wind speed, with Category 5 being the most extreme. A single storm can drop trillions of gallons of rain, leading to deadly flooding. The cost of hurricane damage in the U.S. alone often reaches tens of billions of dollars per storm. Scientists track hurricanes using satellites and aircraft, giving people time to evacuate.
